Interesting facts about Plants

Plants are the only source on this planet, which can synthesise their food through Photosynthesis. As a result, many plants provide several types of benefits for human well-being. We, humans, are entirely dependent upon plants for our daily existence. Can you imagine a world without plants? And what would happen if all the trees disappeared? Yes, it is true. Without plants, there would be no life existing on the earth. They are the only source for providing atmospheric free oxygen. In addition, plants form the base of food chains as they are the only producers and all other living organisms, including humans and animals, depend on plants for their food.

Trees are the longest-living organisms on earth and more than 85% of plant life is found in the ocean. The plant kingdom is filled with so many exciting varieties and facts that will surprise and amaze you.

Check out these ten amazing and exciting facts about plants.

Ten Amazing And Exciting Facts About Plants

Fact -NO -1

Roots are fundamental as they play a significant role in transportation. However, many plants survive without roots. Dodder and other parasitic plants are the best examples of plants with roots.

Fact -NO -2

Plants also synthesise hormones, which are called plant hormones or plant growth regulators. Phytohormones regulate various physiological processes in plants, including cell elongation, cell division, cell differentiation, development of flowers and fruits, inducing parthenocarpy, stimulating chloroplast formation in leaves, formation of chloroplast in leaves, etc.

Fact -NO -3

The California redwood is the tallest evergreen and the largest living species of the Plantae Kingdom in the world. It can live for 1,200–1,800 years or even more. On the other hand, Ginkgo Biloba is the oldest living tree species cultivated early in human history, about 250 million years ago.

Fact -NO -4

Boron, chlorine, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc are essential micronutrients or trace nutrients required in tiny amounts compared to macronutrients. These micronutrients play a crucial role in the growth of leaves, preventing diseases and converting inorganic phosphorus into organic forms. In addition, it is necessary for nitrogen fixation by legumes.

Fact -NO -5

All higher plants live in alternation generations called gametophytes and sporophytes. Gametophytes represent the haploid phase of plants, whereas sporophytes describe the diploid phase of plants.

Fact -NO -6

The coconut tree is a member of the palm tree family and is one of the most valuable trees globally and is often referred to as the “tree of life.”

Coconut is called the “tree of life”, as every part of this tree, including roots, stem, bark, leaves, fruits, and seeds, has been used in different ways.

Fact -NO -7

Plants require nutrients for growth, development and optimum yields. The consequences of a nutritional deficiency in plants can range from stunted growth, deformed leaves, leaf discolouration, loss of fruiting bodies and overall reduced crop production. In addition, both macro and micronutrients in plants assist in various biological processes, including cell division, cell growth, synthesis of chlorophyll, ripening of fruits, cellular transportation,  etc.

Fact -NO -8

The earth has over 3,50,000 species of edible plants. About 50 to 60 percent of food is derived only from plant species, including cereals, pulses, vegetables, fruits, spices, etc. Apart from food, plants are used as a source of timber, fabrics and to date, over 70,000 species are used in pharmaceutical industries for producing medicines.

Fact -NO -9

As per the records found, just 10 percent of the world’s plant-rich areas have been protected. 70 to 80 per cent of the Earth’s original forests have been destroyed for human welfare. With and without human interference, plant species are going extinct, leading to a whole cascade of extinctions in other organisms, which depended on plants and trees.

Fact -NO -10

The fastest-growing plant in the world is the Bamboo plant. Bamboos are an evergreen, woody perennial flowering plant, which can grow about 30 – 35 inches in a single day. There are approximately 1,000 species of bamboo. These were a few interesting facts about the plants. Apart from this, there are a lot more facts.
