The Historical Importance of the City of Philadelphia

Founded in 1682

Home to the Liberty Bell

The Liberty Bell is the most famous symbol of Philadelphia and the United States. In 1751, it was commissioned by the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly from the London firm of Lester and Pack to be placed in the new American capital.

The bell was transported to Philadelphia to be placed on top of Independence Hall, where it would remain until 1859 when it was moved to its current location in the Liberty Bell Center.
